Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Renewal 2026: Process & Requirements

Your initial NLV lasts 1 year, then you renew for 2 years at a time in Spain (not back at the consulate). Renewals are simpler than the initial application. Here is everything you need to know.

When to Apply

Apply during the 60-day window before your TIE card expires. There is a 90-day grace period after expiration, but applying late complicates things. If your TIE expires June 15, your ideal window is April 16 to June 15.

Renewal Requirements

  1. Continued financial means — The annual formula remains the same (400% of IPREM for the main applicant, +100% per dependent). For a 2-year renewal, you must demonstrate sufficient means for the full 2-year period — for a single applicant that’s 2 × €28,800 = €57,600, plus 2 × €7,200 per dependent. Provide recent bank statements and income proof.
  2. Valid health insurance — Active policy meeting NLV requirements (sin copagos, sin carencias, nationwide).
  3. Proof of residence — Padron certificate from your local town hall.
  4. Clean criminal record in Spain — No convictions during your stay.
  5. No work activity — No social security contributions or employment tax filings.

Key difference: No new home-country criminal check, no medical certificate, no apostilles needed. Everything is handled in Spain with Spanish documents.

Documents for Renewal

  • EX-01 form
  • Valid passport (original + copy)
  • Current TIE card (original + copy)
  • Padron certificate (recent)
  • Financial proof (bank statements, pension letters)
  • Health insurance policy
  • Passport-size photos
  • Tasa 790-052 fee payment

Residency Requirement: Time in Spain

To qualify for permanent residency after 5 years, you should avoid long absences from Spain (typically no more than 6 months outside Spain in any 12-month period and no more than 10 months total over 5 years). A recent Supreme Court ruling means temporary NLV renewals can no longer be refused solely because you spent more than 180 days per year outside Spain, but excessive absences can still block your long-term residency. Having an active padron, health insurance, bank account activity, and utility bills all demonstrate genuine residence. Short trips abroad are completely normal.

After 5 Years: Permanent Residency

After 5 continuous years, apply for permanent residency (residencia de larga duracion). This removes the income requirement, grants work rights, provides access to public healthcare, and leads to citizenship after 10 total years.

What Changes at Renewal vs. First Application?

The renewal process is simpler than the initial application in several ways. You no longer need a visa—you apply directly at your local Extranjería office in Spain. The criminal background check is no longer needed (Spain checks your Spanish record automatically). And you do not need to prove your initial financial documentation again from scratch.

However, you must still demonstrate that you continue to meet the financial requirements. Many applicants are surprised to find that the income threshold may have increased since their first application if the IPREM has changed. You also need to show updated health insurance coverage and proof that you have been physically present in Spain for the required time.

NLV Renewal Costs

The renewal itself is significantly cheaper than the initial application because you avoid consulate visa fees and most document preparation costs. Expected costs include:

  • TIE renewal fee (Tasa 790-012): approximately €16–€20
  • Note: Both Tasa 790-052 (~€22, for the renewal of the residence authorization) and Tasa 790-012 (~€16–22, for issuance of the new TIE card) are required. Total government fees: approximately €38–44.
  • Updated health insurance: your ongoing annual premium
  • Immigration lawyer (if used): €500–€1,500 (simpler than initial application)
  • Updated financial documents: bank statements and income letters (no cost if you prepare yourself)

The first renewal gives you a 2-year TIE card. Subsequent renewals also last 2 years, until you reach 5 years of legal residency—at which point you can apply for permanent residency.

Common Renewal Issues

  • Appointment availability — Extranjeria offices in Madrid and Barcelona can be hard to book. Use sede electronica early.
  • Income changes — If income dropped, supplement with savings to show sufficient funds.
  • Health insurance lapse — Even a brief gap causes problems. Keep your policy active continuously.
  • Processing time — Decisions take 1-3 months. Your residency remains valid while waiting (resguardo receipt as proof).
