Since Brexit, British citizens need a visa to live in Spain long-term. The Non-Lucrative Visa is the most popular route for Brits who want to retire to or live in Spain without working. Here is everything UK-specific you need to know, from the ACRO police check to UK State Pension and NHS considerations.
Brexit Changed Everything
Before January 1, 2021, British citizens could move to Spain freely under EU freedom of movement. Post-Brexit, Brits are treated as third-country nationals (like Americans or Canadians) and need a visa to stay longer than 90 days. The NLV is now the standard route for British retirees and those with passive income.
If you were already legally resident in Spain before Brexit (with a green residency certificate or TIE), your rights are protected under the Withdrawal Agreement. This guide is for those applying fresh.
Where to Apply: Spanish Consulate in the UK
British applicants now book appointments and submit their applications through BLS International (the outsourced visa processing partner used by the Spanish consulates in London, Edinburgh, and Manchester). Your consulate of jurisdiction — and therefore which BLS center you use — depends on where you live:
- London consulate — Covers Greater London, the South West, South East, and Eastern regions of England, plus Crown Dependencies (Guernsey, Jersey) and British Overseas Territories (including Gibraltar).
- Manchester consulate — Covers Wales, the Isle of Man, North West England (except Cumbria), Yorkshire and the Humber, and the East and West Midlands.
- Edinburgh consulate — Covers Scotland, Northern Ireland, and the northern English counties of Cleveland, Cumbria, Durham, Northumberland, Tyne & Wear, and Tees Valley.
The London consulate tends to have the longest wait times for appointments due to higher volume; Manchester and Edinburgh are generally faster. For the full consulate jurisdiction map with addresses and contact details, see Spainguru’s Spanish Consulate UK guide.

ACRO Police Certificate: Your Criminal Record Check
UK applicants need an ACRO Police Certificate (not a basic DBS check). Key details:
- Apply online at the ACRO Criminal Records Office website
- Processing time: 2–4 weeks (much faster than the US FBI check)
- Cost: £55 standard (10 working days) or £95 premium (2 working days)
- Apostille: Required via the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO). Can be done by post or through a legalisation service.
- Translation: Must be translated by a traductor jurado (Spanish sworn translator)
- Validity: 3 months from issue — time your application accordingly
UK State Pension and the Income Requirement
The full new UK State Pension in 2025/26 is £230.25 per week (about £1,000 per month, roughly €1,150 at recent exchange rates), which is still below the €2,400/month NLV requirement on its own. This is well below the €2,400/month NLV requirement, so you will need additional income sources:
- Workplace pension — Private pension income from your employer scheme
- Personal pension / SIPP drawdown — Regular withdrawals from your pension pot
- ISA income or savings — Investment returns or savings balances
- Property rental income — If you rent out your UK property
Important: Your UK State Pension is uprated annually while you live in Spain (Spain is covered by the UK-EU Social Security Coordination Protocol). This was not always the case for countries outside the EU/EEA.

Tax Implications for Brits in Spain
- You become a Spanish tax resident — 183+ days in Spain means worldwide income is taxable in Spain.
- UK-Spain Double Taxation Treaty — Prevents being taxed twice. Your UK pension is generally taxed only in Spain.
- UK Government pension exception — Civil service and public sector pensions may remain taxable in the UK under the treaty.
- You stop being a UK tax resident — Once you leave the UK, you generally stop owing UK tax on most income (with some exceptions for UK rental income and government pensions).
- ISAs lose their tax-free status — Spain does not recognise ISA tax wrappers. Investment income from ISAs is taxable in Spain.
Recommended: Consult a UK-Spain cross-border tax advisor before moving. The interaction between UK and Spanish tax rules is complex.

Healthcare: NHS to Spanish Private Insurance
- The NHS does not cover you in Spain — Your EHIC/GHIC card only covers temporary visits, not long-term residence.
- You must purchase Spanish private health insurance meeting NLV requirements.
- If you receive a UK State Pension, you may eventually qualify for an S1 form which gives access to Spanish public healthcare — but only after becoming a permanent resident.
- Private insurance costs £100–£350/month depending on age and coverage.

Practical Tips for British Applicants
- Keep your UK bank account — Essential for pension payments and managing UK affairs. Open a Spanish account on arrival.
- Exchange rate planning — GBP/EUR fluctuations affect your real income. Consider a service like Wise or CurrencyFair for regular transfers.
- Driving licence — Your UK licence is valid in Spain for 6 months. After that, you need to exchange it for a Spanish licence (currently possible under the UK-Spain driving licence agreement).
- Pet travel — Post-Brexit, bringing pets from the UK to Spain requires an Animal Health Certificate (not just a pet passport). Allow 4+ weeks for the process.
- 90/180 day rule while waiting — While your NLV is being processed, you can only stay in Spain for 90 days out of any 180-day period as a tourist. Plan accordingly.

Driving License: Exchanging Your UK License in Spain
Post-Brexit, UK driving licenses are no longer automatically valid for long-term residents in Spain. As an NLV holder, you have 6 months from obtaining your TIE to exchange your UK license for a Spanish one. After that period, you will need to take the full Spanish driving test.
The exchange process involves presenting your valid UK license, a medical fitness certificate (psicotécnico) from an authorized center (approximately €30–€50), and completing the application at your local DGT (Dirección General de Tráfico) office. Processing typically takes 2–4 weeks.
Banking for British Expats in Spain
Opening a Spanish bank account is essential for NLV holders. You will need it for your TIE appointment, health insurance payments, and daily life. As a British citizen post-Brexit, you may face currency conversion fees when transferring GBP to EUR. Services like Wise (formerly TransferWise) offer significantly better exchange rates than traditional banks.
Most Spanish banks (Santander, BBVA, CaixaBank, Sabadell) accept NLV holders with a valid passport and NIE number. Some banks may request proof of address in Spain and your TIE card.
