Tax Advisors for Spain Non-Lucrative Visa Holders

Moving to Spain on a Non-Lucrative Visa changes your tax situation significantly. Spain considers you a tax resident if you spend more than 183 days per year in the country — which means you may owe taxes in both Spain and your home country.

Tax Obligations for NLV Holders

As a Spanish tax resident, you are subject to:

  • IRPF (Income Tax) — Annual income tax on worldwide income, with progressive rates from 19% to 47%
  • Modelo 720 — Mandatory declaration of foreign assets exceeding 50,000 EUR (bank accounts, securities, real estate)
  • Wealth Tax — Applies to net assets above certain thresholds (varies by autonomous community)
  • Capital Gains Tax — On investments, property sales, and other capital gains

Beckham Law (Special Tax Regime)

The Beckham Law allows qualifying new residents to pay a flat 24% tax rate on Spanish-source income for up to 6 years, instead of the standard progressive rates. However, NLV holders generally do not qualify since the Beckham Law is designed for workers relocated to Spain. Digital Nomad Visa holders may qualify instead.

US-Spain Dual Tax Filing

American NLV holders face the unique burden of filing taxes in both countries. The US-Spain tax treaty prevents double taxation, but navigating foreign tax credits, FBAR reporting, and FATCA compliance requires specialized expertise.

UK-Spain Tax Considerations

British expats need to understand their UK tax residency status, the Statutory Residence Test, and how the UK-Spain Double Taxation Agreement affects their pension income, rental income, and capital gains.
